This session will explore the benefits of experiential learning for newcomers and current English as an Additional Language (EAL) students. Did you know that the city of Calgary offers numerous free off-site opportunities that provide students with language-rich experiences? Participants will learn how authentic off-site experiences—such as visiting local parks, museums, and cultural landmarks—can enhance language acquisition and help students integrate into their new environment. Activating and utilizing students' prior knowledge, building new background knowledge, and using post-trip reflections to reinforce vocabulary retention will also be discussed. By connecting classroom learning to real-world, authentic experiences, educators can foster students' language skills, cultural understanding, and sense of belonging in their new community. Emphasis will be placed on accessible, cost-effective options that make these opportunities available to all students.
