Second language learning involves listening, speaking, reading and writing. Too often we rely on writing to introduce the second language. In our teaching, we begin with listening and speaking to introduce and play with language. We use the Literacy Loop to connect these four skills by first listening and practicing speaking before moving on to reading, then writing. Personalized sentences allow students to engage with language at their level. With the help of researchers from the University of Calgary (Roswita Dressler and Katherine Mueller), we will share how we teach German using the Loop and how we reinforce student learning through this predictable structure. Participants will learn several games or activities that can be applied to other second languages as well as English language learning.
