Despite encouraging research, significant barriers to 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusive practices persist, particularly among ECE and elementary schools. This presentation aims to help teachers overcome these barriers by reflecting on the socially constructed nature of sexuality and gender norms, processes of socialization, 2SLGBTQIA+ identities and terms, and typical development of sexual orientation and gender identity in children and youth. This session will discuss current realities experienced by 2SLGBTQIA+ students, including social and political impacts on mental health outcomes, followed by an overview of protective factors, strategies, and resources for inclusive classroom practice. It is our hope that this presentation will build educator capacity and enhance student well-being by offering practical suggestions for creating safe, affirming spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ students and staff in ECE and elementary settings!
