In this session, we will explore the increasingly popular practice of using pop culture references as educational material in higher education, spanning both social and natural sciences. As highlighted by research (Bloch & Spataro, 2016; Dietrich et al., 2021), instructors are creatively incorporating pop culture content—ranging from television shows and movies to music, novels, and comics—along with related technologies like commercial and edutainment video games. This approach not only captures students’ attention but also enhances engagement in the classroom (Battistini, 2019).

You will examine various strategies for integrating pop culture into your teaching, from designing entire courses around themes like the philosophy of *The Simpsons* or the pharmaceutical chemistry depicted in *Breaking Bad*, to embedding humorous references within formal lessons (Tucker, 2008). We will discuss the advanced assessments conducted by Dietrich et al. (2021), which indicate high student satisfaction and improved comprehension of core principles when pop culture is effectively utilized. However, we will also address critical perspectives that caution against a one-size-fits-all approach, noting that excessive reliance on pop culture may not resonate with all students, particularly in terms of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) considerations (Battistini, 2019).

This session aims to illuminate both the benefits and potential pitfalls of incorporating pop culture into higher education, providing participants with practical guidelines for assessing students' reactions to such content and ensuring alignment with formal learning outcomes. We will draw examples from diverse fields, including business administration, communication, finance, construction, culinary arts, formal logic, chemistry, and physics, to showcase the versatility of this approach. Join us as we navigate the landscape of pop culture in education and discover how to leverage it effectively to enhance student learning.
