The Science of Writing Workshop: “The teaching of spelling is intimately linked with the teaching of reading. There is evidence that spelling interventions are more effective at supporting struggling readers than interventions focused on reading.” (Shananahan, 1984, as cited in Such, 2021) As we support students’ right to read, we cannot neglect the importance of explicit, systematic writing instruction. In this 1-hour presentation, Kim Lockhart will highlight the research on handwriting, spelling and writing instruction and share the practical, evidence-based, classroom strategies for implementation in the French immersion setting. Through a “prevention before intervention” lens, she will walk teachers through the foundational writing skills students need to be proficient spellers and writers to ensure all students’ “right to write”.
