Dr. Gonzales is Professor of Ophthalmology at the Francis I. Proctor Foundation at the University of California, San Francisco specializing in uveitis and ocular inflammatory disease. He has been supported by an early career award from the National Institutes of Health – National Eye Institute studying spectrum of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in Sjögren’s disease utilizing the Sjögren’s International Collaborative Clinical Alliance (SICCA) cohort. Dr. Gonzales continues his work studying novel molecular biomarkers in Sjögren’s disease and using confocal microscopy to identify features of the corneal sub-basal nerve plexus in this condition. Additionally, Dr. Gonzales is interested in clinical trial in uveitis and has recently completed a clinical trial comparing different treatments for cytomegalovirus anterior uveitis. Dr. Gonzales’s interests also extend to vitreoretinal lymphoma and using metagenomic sequencing to identify cancer-associated mutations and their associations with clinical features. Dr. Gonzales is the fellowship director for uveitis as well as the fellowship director for the Cecilia Vaughan Memorial Fellowship that sponsors international ophthalmologists seeking to gain additional training in uveitis. He is also a Section Editor for Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, Associate Editor for the Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection, and International Editorial Board Member for the Taiwan Journal of Ophthalmology.
