Brief Abstract

The incidence of acquired esotropia associated with moderate myopia is increasing, yet research on its clinical profile and pathophysiology remains limited. To better understand its characteristics and management, a literature review identified six relevant studies encompassing 304 patients. The mean age of esotropia onset across studies was 37.52 years. Distance and near deviations were comparable, though symptoms were more frequently reported at a distance. The overall mean distance deviation was 25.16 prism diopters, while the near deviation averaged 20.82 prism diopters. Vertical deviations were rarely reported. Preliminary data suggest a potential link between increased near work and larger esodeviations. Surgical management was evaluated in only three studies, indicating that surgical corrections may require augmentation by approximately one-third beyond standard surgical tables, with smaller deviations necessitating even greater adjustments. Further research is needed to refine clinical and surgical approaches to this condition.
