Despite universal health care in Canada, indigenous peoples show a disproportionate burden of disease. The underlying causes of this health disparity are associated with social, economic, cultural and political inequities. (Adelson, 2005) Join an interactive discussion on how to overcome barriers to eye care for indigenous and migrant communities in Canada. We will also review how to apply an ethical framework and integrate appropriate approaches to bridge eye health gaps in these vulnerable populations.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the challenges and the components necessary for impactful community-based eye care initiatives for indigenous and migrant populations
- Demonstrate culturally sensitive approaches to promote eye health and increase eye care delivery and uptake in these vulnerable populations
- Apply an ethical framework to indigenous and migrant health practices
