Open Data for Rural Communities: Measuring Access to Services

13 October 2021, 10:00 AM - 13 October 2021, 12:00 PM EDT

The growth of open geospatial data and tools provides new opportunities to map accessibility to services for rural and remote communities.

With comprehensive and comparable measures on accessibility, policy makers have the enhanced ability to put forward informed, evidence-based policies which can improve the quality of life of entire populations. This is also a main objective of major international measurements frameworks, such as Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Statistics Canada, together with the Centre for Rural Economic Development (Infrastructure Canada), are pleased to present a new Workshop Series on “Measuring Access to Services: International and Canadian Experiences in Rural Analysis”.

Date: Wednesday October 13th, 2021

Time: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm ET

This workshop is one of a series of strategic discussions aimed at expanding our collective knowledge through concrete examples, across Canada and internationally, on the use of data for rural and regional policy analysis.

As geospatial data stewards, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations (UN) will provide an international perspective on how they have been utilizing open geospatial data to measure access to services in rural areas. The workshop will also feature presentations from Canadian analysts within Statistics Canada and Infrastructure Canada.
