David McCormack joined Natural Resources Canada in 1997 as a research scientist working on issues related to nuclear weapons testing and earthquake seismology. He has subsequently occupied successively more senior roles as a research scientist, research manager and executive. Since 2014 he has been the Executive Director of the Canadian Hazards Information Service at Natural Resources Canada, responsible for a staff of over 60, conducting research and operational monitoring and alerting for earthquakes, tsunami, volcanoes and space weather, and providing Canada's mobile nuclear emergency mapping and forensics capacity. Dr McCormack is originally from Northern Ireland, and has a degree in Physics and a PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of Cambridge. He lives in Ottawa.
