
Marja van der Made (Ph.D.) is the Data Protection Officer of the European Space Agency (ESA). She ensures compliance with data protection laws throughout ESA’s space missions, at its seven different (earthly) locations, supporting 7 000 workforce engaged in scientific and medical research, technological development, and international collaboration as well as for ESA activities in outer space. Her experience spans acting as Chair of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s Data Protection Committee and independent supervisory authority; experience in data protection roles in the banking sector (HypoVereinsbank, Bank of Finland, European Central Bank) and in the space industry. She holds qualifications as a Systems Engineer (DE), BSc in Information Management (UK); Business Analysis (USA); Data Protection Certification (NL), an MBA in Project Management (USA) and Innovation and was recipient of the Records Management Award (UK) and the Pro Exzellencia Award (EU). A native of Finland, she takes an interdisciplinary, international and project management approach to the earth and space bound data protection with a focus on privacy by design and default for ESA's innovative technologies and activities.
