Dr. Raúl García-Castro is Senior Lecturer at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). After three years as a software engineer, since he graduated in Computer Science he has been working at UPM in the Ontology Engineering Group in different research projects and collaborations with industry. His research focuses on ontological engineering, ontology-based application integration and semantic interoperability. He has authored more than 150 publications and regularly participates in standardization (ISO, ETSI, W3C, UNE) and in the conferences and workshops that are most relevant in his field.

Privacy in the IoT has becoming a growing concern. A study has even identified it, due to loss of trust of users, as a potential risk for succes. This session gives an overview of the VICINITY IoT platform that is open, free, and that specifically addresses SME and users with privacy concerns. The session gives a broad overview of the VICINITY platform, starting with its general objectives and unique selling points, the P2P architecture, semantic discovery and interoperability, and an ...

Interoperability is largely addressed issue from the different stand points of concerned fields. In the IoT for SLE for ageing well field, there is a clear technological approach for interoperability in the IoT technology domain. For instance, interoperability between IoT platforms in the cloud domain, and interoperability across sensors, smart devices and gateways in the edge domain, i.e. the home environment. In the other side, there is a demand of practical...

The tutorial will introduce the idea of semantic interoperability and the use of ontologies. Participants will learn what an ontology is and how it can be used. A focus will be on reusing and extending existing ontologies,e.g. SAREF, and getting experience on finding the right ontologies for a given purpose in an ontology catalogue. Finally, ontologies will be used to develop a semantic application for one application domain,e.g. smart home, which will then be extended to semantically interop...

This session provides an opportunity for the AIOTI semantic expert group to discuss the role of ontologies in the context of the Green and Digital transformation with external stakeholders. We would like to start with an introduction to the Green and Digital transformation by the EC. Then provide an update about the activities in the AIOTI semantic expert group concerning ontologies (especially the Ontology landscape recently published), while sharing some e...

Much of the potential of the IoT will be realised through value-added services, but this is being held back by fragmentation and limited interoperability. W3C is addressing this through developing web standards for things that decouple applications from the underlying IoT technologies. Applications will no longer need to be developed around the details of the myriad IoT technologies and standards. This means that developers can create applications more easily, ...
With urbanization and the effect of climate changes, we are moving towards a world where hydro-political issues may become a reality. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel as some of the most crucial challenges of water management and conservation could be addressed by leveraging IoT and AI-based technologies. Thus, by using the tools related to predictive analytics within the domains of AI and IoT, to keep track of the history of water consumption and anticipate future usage pa...
13:30 - 14:00 Applied IoT in a water utility by Jan van Cappellen (HYDROKO) Around 205,000 of Kamstrup’s MULTICAL® 21 intelligent water meters are being installed throughout Antwerp over the next three years. About 10.000 have already been installed, and they will be integrated with Hydroko’s HydroKonekt smart valve. The meters are being read remotely via the IoT communication technology SIGFO...
15.25 - 15.55 Exploring IoT, machine learning and data science to challenge and improve a utility by Andreas Bjørn Bassett (Vandcenter Syd A/S)Vandcenter Syd are running pilot projects to improve the efficiency of their utility. Some are rather large IoT projects to assist transforming Odense city into a smart city. With the possibilities from IoT, machine learning and data science also come a wh...
