Samuel Yates, Ph.D., is currently an artist and lecturer in Washington, D.C. and he is joining the faculty of Millikin University’s School of Theatre & Dance in Fall 2021 as an Assistant Professor of Theatre History and Directing. His research lies at the intersection of critical disability studies, contemporary theatrical performance, and crip/queer theory. Samuel is at work on a manuscript titled Cripping Broadway: Disability and the American Musical, which examines how triple-threat performers simulate disability in commercial Broadway musicals. Samuel received his Ph.D. from The George Washington University, where his dissertation research earned the American Society for Theatre Research’s Helen Krich-Chinoy Dissertation Fellowship. He completed an M.Phil in Theatre and Performance Studies from Trinity College Dublin as a George J. Mitchell Scholar. Samuel has collaborated with companies such as the Abbey Theatre, the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, The Samuel Beckett Centre, and Gala Hispanic Theatre.
