Masi Asare

Masi Asare is a composer, lyricist, and bookwriter. She wrote the score for the secret agent musical Sympathy Jones (book by Brooke Pierce), which premiered at the New York Musical Theatre Festival, is published by Playscripts, and has had over 30 productions to date internationally. Current projects include writing book, music, and lyrics for The Family Resemblance, a semiautobiographical musical about a mixed race family in America, commissioned by the Theatre Royal Stratford East (London); and writing a new family musical with playwright Chisa Hutchinson entitled The Forgetting Place. Masi is an alum of the BMI, ASCAP, Bingham Camp, and New Dramatists musical theatre workshops, and is a past Dramatists Guild Fellow. She was honored with the first-ever Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award for a woman composer of musical theatre, with mentorship from Jeanine Tesori and Daryl Roth, is a 2017 Jonathan Larson Grant Finalist and a 2017-18 NEO (New/ Emerging/ Outstanding) Artist at York Theatre Company. Masi is a member of the Lilly Power Network and the women composers collective Maestra. She holds degrees from Harvard and NYU Tisch School of the Arts, where she is currently completing her PhD in Performance Studies with a dissertation about black women on the musical stage. www.masiasare.com
