Josh Garrett-Davis is the Gamble Associate Curator of Western History, Popular Culture, and Firearms at the Autry Museum of the American West. He is the author of the nonfiction books Ghost Dances: Proving Up on the Great Plains (2012) and What Is a Western? Region, Genre, Imagination (2019), and has written academic and popular articles for Western Historical Quarterly, South Dakota History, the New York Times, High Country News, and the Los Angeles Review of Books, among other publications.

He is currently a PhD candidate in US history at Princeton University, researching Native American engagements with audio technology in the early twentieth century. At the Autry, he is leading the renovation of the museum’s core popular culture galleries, scheduled to open in 2021.
