Should the Harry Potter novels continue to be part of the college curriculum? This presentation explores J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, their virtuoso reimagining of British literary traditions, and their skillful use of literary devices. More so, the Harry Potter novels invite (even compel) readers to explore issues of deep relevance to contemporary culture, including their depictions of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and social class. Despite these positive aspects to the novels, Rowling’s transphobia complicates efforts to create an inclusive classroom environment. To all who attend, we promise a more engaging class than those of Professor Binns.
