Magic for the Marginalized and Mistreated
Author Philip Pullman, in his 1996 Carnegie Medal acceptance speech, said: “There are some themes, some subjects, too large for adult fiction; they can only be dealt with adequately in a children’s book.” This quote rings true and certainly speaks to the Harry Potter series. There are subjects covered in the Harry Potter series that are often overlooked, ignored, or swept under the rug. It is our goal to address some of these taboo subjects and how they relate to the real world.
This presentation will focus on not just our love for Harry Potter but how his story is relevant to people of all races, creed, gender and sexuality. When you think of the entirety of the Harry Potter universe there are a lot of marginalized and mistreated people in the series. In this panel we are going to discuss Power & Privilege and how it relates to the following areas: Race, Education and Women. We will also lay out a brief comparison of George Floyd and Harry Potter.
