Drew Speraw (pronounced SPEAR-awe) is in his sixth season at Kansas State in 2017-18 as the director of operations for Bruce Weber.

Speraw has played an impactful role in helping K-State to 100 wins and NCAA?Tournament appearances three of the last five seasons in his roles, first as video coordinator and secondly as the director of operations. The 100 wins are the second-most by a coaching staff in their first five seasons in school history, while Weber is just the four head coaches in school history to guide teams to the NCAA Tournament three times in a 5-year span.

As the program’s video coordinator in 2012-13, Speraw helped K-State to one of its best seasons in school history, as the Wildcats registered a 27-8 overall record and 14-4 mark in league play en route to their first-ever Big 12 Championship and a fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA?Tournament. The 27 wins were the second-most in school history, while the 14 in league play tied the school record held by the 1958-59 team. It was the 20th conference championship in school history and the first since the 1976-77 season.

Speraw initially came to K-State in August 2012 after spending the two seasons at Iowa as first, a graduate student manager (2010-11), and then as an administrative assistant (2011-12) for head coach Fran McCaffery. He took on the added responsibility as video coordinator during the 2011-12 season after the departure of another staff member. Speraw was part of a staff that improved the Hawkeyes’ win total by seven in 2011-12 from the previous season and helped the team earn its first postseason win since 2003.  In all, he helped Iowa win 39 games in two years, including 18 victories and a trip to the second round of the NIT in 2011-12.

The son of former University of Central Florida head coach Kirk Speraw, he played for his father from 2005-10. A team captain as a senior, he played in 66 career games as a Golden Knight. The younger Speraw connected on 39 percent from 3-point range during his college career. The elder Speraw, currently an assistant coach at Iowa, is the all-time winningest coach in UCF history with 279 victories to go with four NCAA Tournament appearances from 1993-2010.  

Speraw earned his bachelor’s degree in finance in 2009 from UCF. He also fulfilled requirements for a master’s degree in sports and fitness with a concentration in sport leadership and coaching from UCF in 2010. He added a second master’s degree in business administration from Iowa in 2012.  

A native of Lakeland, Fla., he attended Oviedo High School in Orlando, Fla., where he was two-year basketball lettermen, helping the Lions to a 24-5 record as a senior en route to the Class 6A Elite Eight. He also competed on the AAU level for the Seminole Shooters. In addition, he was a two-year lettermen for the Lion football team, serving as the starting quarterback in 2004.

Speraw, 30, has a wife, Jamie, who finished her Master’s degree at K-State. The couple have a daughter, Blakely (1).
