Ferris State University tabbed a West Michigan native to become the school's 13th men's basketball head coach when FSU Athletics Director Perk Weisenburger announced the appointment of Andy Bronkema as the Bulldogs' new head coach on June 28, 2013.

A native of McBain, Bronkema was a two-time collegiate All-America student-athlete at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids and spent the previous six seasons as an assistant coach at Ferris State, including three years as the program's top assistant. His elevation to head coach came following an extensive search process that yielded applicants from across the country and covered every level of collegiate basketball.

Bronkema, who took over prior to the 2013-14 season, has led the Bulldogs to four consecutive GLIAC Tournament Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances each of the past four years (2015-18). In 2017-18, he led FSU to one of the most historic seasons in Division II basketball history as Ferris State claimed the school's first National Championship with a memorable 38-1 record, tying the all-time mark for most wins in D2 history. For his efforts, Bronkema was a consensus choice as the National Coach of the Year and led the Bulldogs to a second-straight GLIAC regular-season crown and the school's fourth tourney title in a row.
