Heather Cammisa

Heather has 15 years of experience leading two direct care animal welfare organizations in in addition to several years working with the Humane Society of the United States on broad animal protection issues. Most recently, she served as President & CEO of St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center for 8.5 years, revitalizing the organization to a leadership role regionally and nationally. She led the creation of strategic programs such as the Sister Shelter WayStation program that brings together more than 80 animal welfare organizations, mobilizing capacity, providing a hands-up to areas still overwhelmed with intake and building a sense of community within the field of animal welfare.

She is a frequent speaker at regional and national animal welfare conferences including Humane Society of the United States Animal Care EXPO 2018, Association for Animal Welfare Advancement  (formerly SAWA) 2017, Best Friends Annual Conference 2018 and was the Keynote at the 2018 New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association Annual Conference.  She is a NJ State Certified Animal Control Officer and Animal Cruelty Investigator and has served as an instructor in certification courses for more than a decade. Heather is a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator from the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement (formerly SAWA). 

She was a 2016 recipient of a Maddie’s Fund national HERO TO ANIMALS award and has served on the PetSmart Charities Thought Leader Round Table 2016-2018.  She has served on community and nonprofit boards and committees ranging from municipal utilities to a marine mammal stranding center.

Heather holds a Master Degree in Economics from Rutgers University and worked in both financial and social economics before devoting her career to animal protection.
