Workplace culture and environment are critical components to animal lifesaving. It can be the difference between team members who are engaged or burned out, pet owners feeling welcomed or judged, volunteers working with or against us – all of these dynamics either positively or negatively impact animal outcomes. While Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) have become the mainstream approach for how organizations create inclusive workplaces, these efforts too often fall short and result in tokenization and assaults to personal dignity. Through education, reflection and sharing of practical tools, this session will focus on belonging & dignity as a framework for building a resilient & welcoming workplace, particularly through identifying the privilege we all hold and recognizing the trauma this work perpetuates.
