We write books about aliens and dragons and all sorts of completely fictional constructs, but the struggle to include queer characters, characters of color, older characters, and characters with disabilities still plagues the genre in spite of all that. And so often, when included, they'll fall victim to overdone--and sometimes offensive--tropes. What's an author to do? Our panel has been through the trenches already and are willing to offer advice, tips, and resources for broadening those characters out and hopefully avoiding some of the pitfalls along the way.
