All the nations of Hyboria have turned a worried eye to Aquilonia, fearful that the tragedies that befell that kingdom could soon be visited upon their own lands.  The long, stable line of monarchs ended when King Numedides was usurped by demi-god Xotil who was given flesh in the body of Bagoas the Eunuch. Prosperity and order were replaced overnight with poverty and lawlessness when the Demon Lord shrouded his lands in an eternal twilight.  This darkness served as a beacon to all that was evil and corrupt in the world, summoning them to what many now call the Forbidden Lands. Few ever escape from its boundaries, but the ones that do tell horrific tales of murder, mayhem and maliciousness. For now it seems that Xotil is content with his conquest, but that will not hold forever.  Unless his reign is put to an end, an army of darkness will spill upon the other nations of Hyboria which will spell great cataclysm that will bring an end to the Third Age of Man.

Come join SLUGS for another jaunt into the world of Conan, and explore a story that is one part high fantasy and another Lovecraftian horror.  Pre Meeting at 6:00pm on Friday Night, Game Starts and 8:00pm and runs till late at the Doubletree Hotel. Wrap up at 5:00pm on Saturday.

Using Mythology In Your Fiction
1 hour, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Gateway Center - Marquette A

Panel

Sela Carsen (Moderator)

Where fairy tales happen in a magical alternate world, myths are tales of the world we exist in now. They tell us where we came from, why we are like we are, how things came to be, and how they will end. Mythical heroes were not born from imagination but from the struggles of reality. Or at least they were a version of reality that helped to explain our lives, and taught us to reach for the stars to find our place with the gods.

So when we add mythology to fiction, don’t think of these gods and heroes as existing on some imaginary plane, but in the passion and madness of the worlds we build - past, present, or future, real or fantastic.

We’ll cover some broad strokes of different mythologies from all over the world, as well as discuss some of the common threads of global stories. We’ll even touch on how to develop your own mythology for world building.

Don't MYTH out on this workshop!

On February 10th, 2018, the St. Louis Fannish and Comic Book Communities unexpectedly lost a lifetime member, Michael McFadden.

Michael's first convention experience was in 1967 at the St. Louis World Con, when he was just 14.  A phenomenal artist, a comic book grader at CGC, and a true fan and friend, the hole Michael's departure has created is keenly felt by many - especially his two daughters, whom he raised in fandom and who now have places on the Archon Committee.  In 41 years, Michael never missed an Archon.

Bring your stories and join Erin and Patricia as they remember their father at their first Archon without him.

As news of the Battle of Yavin spreads, the reputation of the Galactic Empire is heavily under fire.  To recover his influence over the galaxy, the Emperor has seen fit to raise tariffs on precious metals and other resources.
While generally operating in concert with the Empire, the Mining Guild does not share the same ideologies as their patronage.  Imperial Intelligence has received word that the Guild seeks to break from the Empire by negotiating a partnership with the Rebel Alliance.  To investigate these claims and protect their valuable interests, the Empire has dispatched an emissary to the Guild on the mining planet of Zoth, in the outer rim territories.
The economy in the outer rim territories varies slightly from the rest of the galaxy.  Imperial credits are not recognized.  Instead, most trade is conducted in service, or in kind by gems and precious metals.  Although precious metals are plentiful on the planet, mining them is not a safe enterprise.   Workers report a disturbing presence lurking deep in the mines, and some have not returned to the surface with their sanity intact.  Still, there is safety in numbers.

Statistically, something like the Chelyabinsk event happens several times a decade, the Tunguska event several times a millennium, and the Chicxulub event about every one hundred million years.  The discovery rate for really large NEAs (Near Earth Asteroids) that could upset the climate and agriculture and cause civilization to collapse is down to a trickle but we've found very few of the million or so Chelyabinsk class NEAs.  Space based B612's Sentinel and NASA's NEOcam are in budget limbo.  Ground based telescopes can find the "small" ones when they pass by "closely".  There are several proposals for diverting an asteroid but no proven hardware.  At least the United Nations does have a sub-committee tasked with coordinating the cooperation of space faring nations for mitigating the asteroid hazard when one is found on a collision course.
