Vanessa is an active civic volunteer and public servant, tirelessly devoted to making Cincinnati a better place for children and families. She has a heart for the city and works to help it grow for all. The mother of two adult children and three college students, she lives in the city’s North Avondale neighborhood. Her efforts led her to the Cincinnati Board of Education in 2009. A graduate of Walnut Hills High School, Vanessa earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati and her MBA from Xavier University. Currently Vanessa is a candidate for her Ph.D. in Education Policy at the University of Cincinnati. Vanessa’s civic participation has ranged from her past positions as board president of Parents for Public Schools, board member of Lighthouse Youth Services, the Art Academy and the Charter Committee, a member of the city’s Charter Amendment Task Force and a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). She’s an alumna of the Urban League’s African American Leadership Development Program and the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber’s WE (Women Excel) Lead program. Vanessa spent fifteen years as a child and family welfare professional, served in various non-profit management positions and as a strategy consultant to non-profit organizations focused on expanding access to quality educational opportunities and on community engagement. She designed the public will-building strategy for the successful ballot initiative to expand access to quality early childhood education. She went on to be the Implementation Project Lead and Director of Operations for the new non-profit Cincinnati Preschool Promise. Her current role as Chief of Staff for a Cincinnati councilmember allows her to focus on broader policies to impact quality of life issues for the city’s children and families.
