Stories in Stone: Exploring Cincinnati’s Historic Jewish Cemeteries. Sponsored by The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives

When:
12:30 PM, Sunday 31 Mar 2019 (2 hours)
Where:
Cincinnati, OH - Offsite
How:

Gary P. Zola will lead us on a guided tour through two of Cincinnati’s most historic Jewish cemeteries: The Chestnut Street Cemetery and The Walnut Hills Cemetery. This trip constitutes a rare opportunity to examine the rich history of Reform Judaism in Cincinnati by visiting the final resting places of the men and women who made that history. We will learn about the lives of several pioneering founders of Cincinnati’s Jewish community as well as many giants of the CCAR who preceded us in life: Rabbis Isaac Mayer Wise, Max Lilienthal, Israel Bettan, Nelson Glueck, Gotthard Deutsch, Jacob Rader Marcus, and many others. We will also pay our respects to HUC’s first woman rabbinical student, Ms. Julia Ettlinger, a member of the school’s inaugural class in 1875. The seminar will conclude with the recitation of Kaddish D’Rabbanan on behalf of the colleagues and teachers who influenced our people, our movement, and us.

Meet in the hotel lobby at 12:30 PM to board buses.
