The future of Reform "Innovation" is guaranteed. What must be intentionally cultivated by American rabbis, cantors, educators, and lay leaders, however, is the "anchor in tradition." This session seeks to share and explore sources for contemporary liturgical creativity within Jewish tradition, by examining selected piyutim  (liturgical poetry and hymns), prayers from the old rite of the land of Israel in fragmentary prayerbooks from Cairo Genizah, and melodies from other Jewish communities around the world, as well as examples of their use and adaption in contemporary worship. When drawn upon sensitively and selectively, these kinds of materials can enrich our Jewish liturgical experiences and provide variety and models for our own liturgical, ritual, and musical creativity.
