This session is designed as a sharing session of predominantly novels, that Secondary English Language Arts (ELA) Teachers value as worthy of being teachable to their current students. ELA Teachers can experience unintended consequences when choosing the "right" text for their classroom that is not from the AB Ed approved list of 2005. 2005! That’s 20 years ago! – and there have been thousands of amazing novels, short stories, plays, poems and other newer styles of literature since then. So where to begin? – how to judiciously choose a valuable text for your classroom. Is the text age, grade level, and/or content appropriate, as well as engaging, universal and of literary merit?

Teachers attending this session will bring their favourite newest classroom worthy novel and one other text to share with colleagues. During Pre-Registration for this session teachers will submit their two chosen texts with genre and text creator's name as well as their name and contact email (to create a shareable list). During the session, teachers will briefly show and speak to the literary merit of their recommended texts. Coming away from this session, we will have an updated list of worthy texts that will help to inform teachers and broaden our repertoire of new, literature worthy of teaching.
