W. Bruce Jackson, MD, FRCSC

Dr. Jackson completed his medical training at University of Western Ontario and residency in ophthalmology at McGill University. This was followed by a fellowship at the Proctor Foundation, University of California, San Francisco in cornea and external disease. He was Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at McGill (1987-1991), and Chair and Director General of the University of Ottawa Eye Institute (1991-2008). Dr. Jackson moved from Ottawa to Peterborough, Ontario in December 2014 and continues his subspecialty practice in cornea and external disease with an emphasis on ocular surface disease at the Peterborough Clinic. He is a participant on several pharmaceutical advisory boards and presents clinical and research studies at major meetings. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and chapters related to refractive surgery, dry eye disease and new therapies, as well as training many cornea fellows. Dr. Jackson is the recipient of the COS Lifetime Achievement Award; Castroviejo Medal, Cornea Society; and Senior Achievement Award, AOA.

Mashad Darvish, MD

Dr. Darvish was raised in Vancouver, BC and attended UBC for his Bachelor of Science. He then moved to Montreal and obtained his medical degree and MBA at McGill University. He continued at McGill for his residency in Ophthalmology. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Darvish continued his studies in Cincinnati, Ohio with a fellowship in Cornea and External Disease under Dr. Edward Holland. He then capped his studies at the Singapore National Eye Institute with Dr. Donald Tan.

Dr. Darvish then moved back to Montreal and is now an Assistant Professor at McGill University and the Program Director for the Ophthalmology Residency at McGill. He is a cornea section editor for the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology, has written several book chapters and has presented at international ophthalmology conferences.

Walter Delpero, MD, FRCSC, DABO

COS Representative

After receiving his Medical Degree at the University of Toronto in 1984, Dr. Delpero completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa and practiced ophthalmology at the National Defence Medical Centre. After retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1996 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and Head of the department of ophthalmology, he entered private practice as a comprehensive ophthalmologist. He remains the consultant ophthalmologist for the Department of National Defence, Transport Canada and Health Canada, and is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, Department of Ophthalmology. He has held the positions at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as Chair of the Examination Board for ophthalmology and subsequently as Specialty Chair. Dr. Delpero maintains special interest in cataract surgery, adult strabismus and aviation ophthalmology. Currently he chairs the Clinical Practice Guideline Committee for the Canadian Ophthalmological Society and has been involved in the development and publication of several clinical practice guidelines.

Il a ensuite bénéficié d’une bourse de recherche pour étudier le traitement de la cornée et des maladies externes de l’œil à la Proctor Foundation (Université de Californie à San Francisco). Il a été professeur et a occupé la chaire d’ophtalmologie à McGill (1987–1991), avant d’occuper le poste de président et directeur général de l’Institut de l’œil de l’Université d’Ottawa (1991—2008). Le Dr Jackson a déménagé d’Ottawa à Peterborough (en Ontario) en décembre 2014 où il continue sa pratique de surspécialité dans le traitement de la cornée et des maladies externes de l’œil (notamment de la surface oculaire) à la Peterborough Clinic. Il collabore à plusieurs conseils consultatifs dans le domaine pharmaceutique et présente ses résultats cliniques et de recherche aux réunions scientifiques d’importance. Il a publié de nombreux articles et chapitres évalués par les pairs sur la chirurgie réfractive, la kératoconjonctivite sèche et les nouveaux traitements, en plus de former de nombreux boursiers dans le traitement de la cornée. Le Dr Jackson est titulaire des prix Reconnaissance pour l’ensemble d’une carrière (SCO), Castroviejo Medal (Cornea Society) et Senior Achievement Award (AOA). Après sa retraite des Forces armées canadiennes en 1996 (il portait alors le grade de lieutenant-colonel et travaillait comme chef du Département d’ophtalmologie), il a débuté sa pratique privée en tant qu’ophtalmologiste généraliste. Il demeure toutefois ophtalmologiste consultant pour le ministère de la Défense nationale, Transports Canada et Santé Canada et est également professeur adjoint à l’Université d’Ottawa (Département d’ophtalmologie). Il a été président du comité d’examen en ophtalmologie, puis président d’un comité de spécialité au Collège Royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada. Le Dr Delpero continue de s’intéresser à la chirurgie de la cataracte, au strabisme chez l’adulte et à l’ophtalmologie de l’aviation. Il préside actuellement le Comité d’experts du Guide de pratique clinique de la Société canadienne d’ophtalmologie et a participé à l’élaboration et à la publication de plusieurs lignes directrices de pratique clinique.
