In this 90-minute workshop, participants will look at the importance of the information shared with the patient, the style of communication, as well as capacity and liberty. Dr. Richard Mimeault of the CMPA will define Informed Consent and review some cases specific to the ophthalmologist’s practice. Participants will be led through a series of vignettes around Informed Consent with a focus on communication styles.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the medico-legal impact of informed consent with particular reference to ophthalmology
  • List the three basic elements of informed consent
  • Explain the importance of patient centred communication used when obtaining informed consent
  • Describe three strategies to improve communication style
