Words from the Wise: Personal and professional perspectives for the young ophthalmologist

Theme:
Young Ophthalmologists and Residents
When:
2:45 PM, Thursday 31 May 2018 (2 hours 45 minutes)
How:
Are you ready to take the next step in your career as an ophthalmologist? Words from the Wise presents detailed talks on fellowships and research and clinical ophthalmology careers. This includes finding the right fellowship for you, application requirements, and when to schedule electives/observerships. There will be a presentation on how to navigate the visa requirements for Canadians pursuing subspecialty training in the US, and the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) will also be discussed.

If you’re ready to launch your career, learn about how ophthalmology jobs are posted, how to research openings, and how to optimize your application. Learn how to market and build a name for yourself, and improve your prospects for landing your ideal position! Participants will gain an improved understanding of what it takes to be a researcher, how to establish a research lab, and how to apply for grants/funding. In addition, you will learn how research and clinical work impact one another: the benefits to patients, the physician, and the profession at large!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After this session, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the process of applying to subspecialty fellowships in ophthalmology
  • Apply steps to optimize job applications after ophthalmology residency
