Sara Krulwich

Raised in NYC, Sara Krulwich attended the University of Michigan where she spent most of her time working for the student newspaper, the Michigan Daily. She became the Daily’s first woman staff photographer. After graduation, Sara worked at The Providence Journal, The Journal Inquirer and The Philadelphia Inquirer. At all three of these papers she was the first female staff photographer. Sara started work at the New York Times in 1979, where she covered sports, politics and general assignments. In 1992 she became the mother of twins and began transitioning to a new position as a designated culture photographer. At first she primarily covered dance, opera and cultural news. Over time, Sara succeeded in gaining access to NY theater, which became the focus of her work.
