In this “year of women” in theatre, it’s interesting to discuss Dorothy Fields—for five years she kept pace with Rodgers & Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, and Irving Berlin as one of the only female lyricists writing for commercial theater, paving the way for Betty Comden and Carolyn Leigh. This lecture discusses her career writing A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Annie Get Your Gun, Sweet Charity, and her hits like “The Way You Look Tonight.”
