Broadway shows literally cannot be seen without the work of brilliant lighting designers who illuminate both the scenes and the ideas conceived by the playwright and director. Unfortunately, the work of lighting designers is often lost when a show closes, as it is very hard to document the dynamic effects of a good lighting design using traditional archival tools. A group of lighting designers, scholars, and staff the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts are currently investigating whether it might be possible to recreate historical lighting designs using computer gaming platforms such as Unity. This panel will discuss the art of creating lighting design, the difficulty of preserving it, and the work of the current project.
