One Year of Seismology on Mars: Update on the InSight Mission

Theme:
Grades 9-12
What:
Session
When:
9:30 AM, Friday 7 Feb 2020 (1 hour 30 minutes)
How:
I will first review how seismic waves are generated on Earth, how they propagate through a planet, and how we can use seismic recordings to constrain the interior structure of a planet. I will then talk about the InSight's mission goals, the geophysical instruments that have been deployed since it landed on Mars, and will show the seismic data that have been collected, some of which are freely available online for research and teaching purposes. We will compare them with earthquakes and Moon quakes, and discuss what they imply for Mars structure.
