NASA does not have a “weightless room” but it has the next best thing: simulated weightlessness in a huge water tank. It should have been obvious to train astronauts for weightlessness underwater. But it wasn’t, and the reasons why offer insights into human nature, bureaucratic inertia and human creativity. This presentation will describe the circumstances leading up to the first weightlessness simulations underwater, applications of the technique to early spaceflight problems, its adoption as standard spaceflight training and its spread to astronaut training centers around the world.
