Dr. Bernard Hurley , BSc, MD, FRCSC

Bernard R. Hurley, BSc, MD, FRCSC is an Assistant Professor at The University of Ottawa Eye Institute.  Dr Hurley served as the residency program director for the University of Ottawa for 12 years and continues to serve as the Fellowship Director for the University of Ottawa and served as the inaugural chair of the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada Ophthalmology Program Directors Committee.  He is also the current medical director for the University of Ottawa Ophthalmic Medical Technology Program.

He has received numerous awards for teaching including the top clinical teaching award from the University of Ottawa in 2022, 2021, 2016, 2013 and 2011.

He completed his post-graduate medical education with a Retina Fellowship at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia where he was twice awarded the Outstanding Fellow Award for the top fellow at the Wills Eye Hospital.

He currently serves as Vice-Chair for the Ophthalmology Exam Committee for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and head of the Retina Section of the Exam Committee.  As well he is Chair of the Ophthalmology Exam Committee for Royal College International (RCi) and serves as an examiner for the Center for the Evaluation of Health Professionals Educated Abroad (CEHPEA).  He is proud to serve as Director of Continuing Medical Education for the Canadian Retina Society and Retina lead for the Ontario Vision Strategy Task Force.

For his research activity, centered on diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, he has twice received the top poster award of the Canadian Ophthalmology Society, The EA Baker Fellowship for Vitreo-Retinal Surgery, The University of Ottawa External Fellowship Award, The COS/Coherent-AMT Award for Excellent in Ophthalmic Research, the William Tasman Fellowship Award, the Sigma Xi Award from the University of Texas and the Dr. Dewitt Wilcox Award in Medical Research from the University of Western Ontario.

Prior to entering ophthalmology, he graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics a worked for Lumonics Inc. as an applications lab engineer designing CO2 and YAG laser systems where he was awarded the Consulting Engineers of Ontario Award.

Finally, for his humanitarian service, he received the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award from the Terry Fox Foundation.
