Theme:
Young Ophthalmologists and Residents
Description: This hands-on workshop is designed by residents, for residents, with senior ophthalmology residents (PGY4/5) tutors guiding junior ophthalmology residents (PGY1-3) participants in developing core eye suturing skills. Supported by the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS), this course offers practical experience in precise corneal suturing, scleral pass creation, and effective tissue handling to enhance surgical confidence. Using surgical loupes and a demonstration microscope, residents will practice common suturing methods such as interrupted and continuous sutures, simple scleral pass techniques, and stabilization techniques critical for corneal and scleral repairs. By the end of the course, attendees will improve their dexterity and technique, preparing them for complex surgical cases. This workshop is ideal for those aiming to strengthen their foundational skills under close supervision and expert guidance.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in essential corneal suturing techniques, ensuring proper tension and alignment for effective wound closure.
- Develop safe scleral pass techniques with confidence, applying appropriate needle handling and positioning to minimize tissue damage and achieve stable wound closure.
- Differentiate between various suturing materials, methods, equipment, and their specific applications in corneal and scleral repairs, selecting the most appropriate technique based on the clinical scenario.
Target Audience: Junior ophthalmology residents (PGY1-3)
