Jane Klain is the Manager of Research Services at The Paley Center for Media. An archivist and researcher in theater, film, and television, she earned front-page coverage in the New York Times when she single-handedly discovered tape masters from the “lost” television series The American Musical Theatre, featuring rare footage of Richard Rodgers, Stephen Sondheim, Bob Fosse, Beverly Sills, and many more theater legends. Most recently she located the raw tape masters for the 1966 telecast of The Glass Menagerie with Shirley Booth and Hal Holbrook, had them reconstructed and aired on TCM fifty years to the date that it aired for the only time. She also unearthed the rehearsal films of Julie Andrews’s Cinderella in the CBS tape vaults and the long-lost second half of Sunday Showcase: What Makes Sammy Run? as well as the Burton Lane–Dorothy Fields musical Junior Miss and The Heiress starring Julie Harris. In addition, Ms. Klain has been the principal theater critic for Good Times Magazine since 1985 and is a voting member of the Drama Desk and the Outer Critics Circle. Previously, she served as editor of The International Motion Picture Almanac and The International Television and Video Almanac, associate editor of The Encyclopedia of Film, theater and film reviewer for Where Magazine, and theater editor of Baseline Inc. As a researcher on television documentaries, her credits include: Broadway: The Golden Age; Leonard Bernstein: Reaching for the Note; Richard Rodgers, The Sweetest Sounds; The Rodgers and Hart Story: Thou Swell, Thou Witty; Tupperware; American Classics; TVLand Moguls; the BBC’s Changing Stages; Joseph Papp in Five Acts; the PBS series Broadway: The American Musical; Make 'em Laugh; American Musicals: A Jewish Legacy; the James Lapine HBO documentary, Six By Sondheim and the PBS American Masters documentaries Sammy Davis Jr.: I’ve Got to Be Me and Lorraine Hansberry: Sighted Eyes/Hearing Heart. She is currently a producer on Broadway: Beyond the Golden Age and a researcher on West Side Stories: The Stories and Great Performances’ Hal Prince: The Prince of Broadway.
