This session will link Dr. Strom’s presentation to the afternoon workshops focused on practical ideas about instruction in classrooms. After hearing Dr. Strom, you will have a good idea of what’s going on in the brain when non-readers become readers. However, since we can’t ‘see’ the neural wiring happening for individuals, we need to know what we can observe in classrooms to keep us on a good instructional track for individuals. Using a response to intervention model, teachers can develop good understanding of whether reading is developing typically for particular students, or if some may need more support. Sara Peden will look at these questions through the lenses of Structured Literacy™ and tiers of instruction/intervention. She will discuss assessment, reading struggles and when to wonder if there may be a need for clinical assessment (speech/language or psychological assessment, for example).
