James Whelan
Dr. Whelan was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland and completed his Undergradute Degree in Physics and his Medical Degree at Memorial University. He completed a 4 year Residency in Ophthalmology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He then completed a 2 year fellowship in Medical and Surgical training in diseaes of the Retina,Vitreous and Intraocular Tumors at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.
Dr. Whelan is currently an Assistant Professor, and Retina Surgeon for the Department of Surgery at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is a staff Retina Surgeon for the Eastern Health Corporation at the Health Science Center and Janeway Child Health Center in St. John’s. He is Past President of the Candian Retina Society, and former Board Member of the Canadain Ophthalmological Society. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmologists and member of the American Society of Retina Surgeons. He is a founding and standing member of the Can-PAT committee for the Canadian Retina Society
His main areas of research are Inherited Retinal Disorders, Surgical Treatment of Advanced Diabetic Retinopathy and anti-VEGF Agents in the Treatment of Retinovascular Disease. He has also been volunteer faculty for ORBIS International on numerous programs worldwide
