STC: Innovations in Minimally Invasive Strabismus Surgery

Theme:
Skills Transfer Course (STC)
What:
STC | CTC
When:
3:45 PM, Friday 10 Jun 2022 (1 hour 30 minutes)
How:

This hands-on lab will transfer the surgical skills required for the use of newer strabismus techniques. Attendees will perform the procedures using a 3D-printed silicone model validated for strabismus surgery simulation, under the operating microscope and/or using attendee’s personal loupes. Specific techniques the attendee will learn include: use of the grooved hook for safe suturing of tight muscles, revised hang-back recession with tissue glue, rectus muscle plication, and the minimally invasive techniques of partial rectus tenotomy and central plication usefulfor treating small-angle strabismus. This STC will present techniques that ophthalmologists at all stages of their career can incorporate into their practice and provide an opportunity for ophthalmology trainees, and ophthalmologists involved in teaching strabismus surgery to residents and fellows, to learn and practice innovative strabismus surgery techniques using a novel strabismus surgery simulation model.

Learning Objectives

  • Perform newer strabismus surgical techniques that will improve patient care and clinical outcomes for both paediatric and adult strabismus patients
  • Recognize and describe minimally invasive strabismus surgery options for patients with small angle strabismus
  • Use a novel strabismus surgery simulation model to practice and demonstrate strabismus surgery techniques
