Public Safety Canada has a mandate to keep Canadians safe from a range of risks, including natural disasters, and has taken recent steps to incorporate the use of data and science into all aspects of Emergency Management.  In 2020, Public Safety stood up the Data Science and Engineering Team (DSET) to provide technical expertise and quantitative risk analysis in support of major policy programs, including Flood Insurance, Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangement, development of a Flood Risk Awareness Portal, and federal investment project screening.  DSET performs national-scale risk analysis using data, models, and geomatics to assess hazard and risk, and to estimate the impacts of floods, earthquakes, and wildfires on people and property across Canada. Our team’s work, including a first-of-its-kind financial flood risk assessment for every residential address in Canada, and forward looking climate impact assessments, has been presented across North America, and in Europe and Asia.  This presentation will focus on some of the recent quantitative risk analysis performed by DSET, and discuss science, engineering, and geomatics employment opportunities within Public Safety.
