The Virtual Assembly Showcase highlights the value of integrating advanced 3D laser scanning and virtual assembly in industrial construction. In a recent expansion at a major Oil Sands Refinery, detailed 3D laser scanning and surveying were employed to ensure the precise placement and assembly of three large modules while they were still in the laydown yard.

The process involved scanning critical structural elements and newly poured foundation pilings to detect potential fitment issues before installation. By aligning 3D scans with site control and design models, a comprehensive virtual assembly exercise was performed, allowing for the digital placement of modules and the early identification of issues. This proactive approach significantly reduced errors in the complex construction environment.

The project was completed efficiently, with approximately 700 3D laser scans conducted over nine field days. This case study exemplifies the educational benefits of utilizing advanced 3D technologies in construction, demonstrating how they can improve accuracy, enhance safety, and streamline project timelines.
