Robin Parker

Mount Royal Symposium
Participe à 2 sessions

Dr. Robin Parker has been an educator in the Calgary area for over 20 years. She has taught in K-9 classrooms as well as at university as an instructor of undergraduate and graduate students. Having spent time working in specialized literacy settings allowed her to begin to focus her professional growth on how children might best acquire foundational literacy skills. Years later, this continues to be an area of passion. One of her favourite aspects of her current role is seeing the joy and confidence in students as they begin to see themselves as readers and writers!

This keynote address (60 mins with Q&A) will provide an incisive analysis of current Indigenous-settler relations in light of historical truths of colonization, specifically but not limited to recent "revelations" around residential schools, and the role education must play today in ensuring truths are told and paths to reconciliation are established and walked.

These questions will be at the heart of this session, which will focus on the science behind reading and spelling development - and how to apply brain-based findings to classrooms. This session will be interactive and participants will leave with actionable insights, frameworks, and methods to apply in their work with readers and with teachers...

This session will link Dr. Strom’s presentation to the afternoon workshops focused on practical ideas about instruction in classrooms. After hearing Dr. Strom, you will have a good idea of what’s going on in the brain when non-readers become readers.
