Bird Watching Tours around Belém

Contact Pablo Cerqueira (EN and PT)

Option 1 - Utinga Park (Belém)

Maximum Group Size: 10
Habitat: mostly rainforest
Trail level: easy
Photo opportunities: good
Area description: The Utinga State Park is a forested area encompassing 1,353 ha on the outskirts of Belém city. It is a government conservation unit created to preserve the forest, wildlife, and water sources supplying Belém city. As an urban park, it is common to see people walking, cycling, or just relaxing and looking for small animals on the track.
Avifauna: The Utinga State Park has about 200 bird species recorded, and it is a good place to see parrots, parakeets, toucans and aracaris on the main road, but on side trails it is possible to observe antbirds, flycatchers, woodcreepers and woodpeckers. Highlights include the following species: White-winged Parakeet (Brotogeris versicolurus), Orange-winged Parrot (Amazonica amazonica), White-throated and Channel-billed Toucans (Ramphastos tucanus and Ramphastos vitellinus), Black-necked Aracari (Pteroglossus aracari), Lettered Aracari (Pteroglossus inscriptus), and the locally threatened Eastern Red-necked Aracari (Pteroglossus bitorquatus), Straight-billed and Plain-brown Woodcreeper (Dendroplex picus and Dendrocincla fuliginosa), Wedge-billed Woodcreeper (Glyphorhynchus spirurus), Yellow-throated Woodpecker (Piculus flavigula), Cream-colored Woodpecker (Celeus flavus), Amazonian Antshrike (Thamnophilus amazonicus), Buff-throated Saltator (Saltator maximus), Yellow-rumped Cacique (Cacicus cela). These species are just glimpses of the possibilities in the Utinga State Park.
Other Wildlife: While walking looking for birds, we may encounter mammals like the Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth (Bradypus variegatus) and Collins’s Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri collinsi), as well as the guttural sound of the Eastern Red-handed Howler (Allouatta belzebul) early in the morning. Additionally, there are great opportunities to observe insects and spiders on the side trails, including many butterflies, dragonflies, and beetles.
Details: Utinga State Park is approximately 9 km (about 20 min) from Estação das Docas, where the conference will take place. The time and place of the meeting are to be determined.
Additional Recommendations: The weather is normally warm and humid, but rain is a possibility even during the dry season. We recommend using lightweight clothes (long sleeves are better for extra protection against mosquitoes) and walking boots; avoid bright colors and wear neutral colors instead; bring along a hat and sunscreen for sun protection and insect repellent, and carry a raincoat or an umbrella in a small bag in case of rain during birding. Most important: Don’t forget your bottle of water.
