Manlong Xu, MD, PhD., is currently an ophthalmology resident (PGY1) at the University of Toronto.
Manlong completed medical school at Sun Yat-sen University, China. After moving to Canada, she obtained a joint PhD degree in vision science and biology from the University of Waterloo, followed by a research fellowship at the University of Alberta.
Under the guidance of Dr. Ian MacDonald, Manlong’s research focused on retinal disorders, specifically choroideremia, retinitis pigmentosa, and hydroxychloroquine retinal toxicity. Her work in choroideremia centered on gene therapy, antisense oligonucleotide (ASOs) therapy, and the development of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cell model
