DNA barcoding has successfully expanded our knowledge of our planet's biodiversity. However, the freshwater ecosystems, which are vital for all terrestrial life on our planet, have seen less progress compared to terrestrial environments, with most work focusing on adult fish. Invertebrates such as copepods, cladocerans, and rotiferans, lag far behind despite their prominent role as food source in rivers and lakes, while mites, chironomids, amphipods, or fish larvae are even less popular. Worldwide, only a few countries have a good coverage of freshwater taxa, mostly European and North American countries. We hope this session will promote a lively exchange on progress to date and future options to boost freshwater barcoding.
