DNA barcode reference libraries underpin all DNA barcoding and metabarcoding applications. Implementation of quality control and curation standards in reference libraries of DNA barcodes is vital for the reliability and accuracy of DNA barcode-based taxonomic identifications, particularly when employing unsupervised taxonomic assignments to DNA metabarcoding reads. In this session, efforts to build and curate reference libraries will be addressed. Talks will include large-scale reference library-building projects in different regions of the world, and a very broad diversity of taxonomic groups. The session will provide an overview of the status and challenges of reference libraries, with a particular focus on auditing and curation issues.
