Privacy in the IoT has becoming a growing concern. A study has even identified it, due to loss of trust of users, as a potential risk for succes. This session gives an overview of the VICINITY IoT platform that is open, free, and that specifically addresses SME and users with privacy concerns. The session gives a broad overview of the VICINITY platform, starting with its general objectives and unique selling points, the P2P architecture, semantic discovery and interoperability, and an ...
How can we ensure not making the same mistakes as with the (failed) smart city (applications), but co-create services in the vertical applications (body/health, home/energy, car/sharing, region/collective intelligence) with all stakeholders including citizens? In this workshop we want to investigate the procedure of embedding these ideas and requirements in a Digital Signature for the Infrastructure. This has the important bonus it no longer matters who hosts ...
STARTS Talks are series of discussions engaging people from diverse disciplines. They aim at addressing themes from many different angles sustained by the general fields of Sciences, Technologies and the Arts. STARTS Talks target the creation of new policies or the transformation of ongoing ones. Therefore, they are always moderated by a policy maker.
Privacy in the IoT is driven by the wish of consumers, enabled (or not) by standards, enforced by law, and can be a threat for business models. This session consists of presentations that give an introduction into the topic, introduce business models for IoT platforms that do not necessarily rely on exploiting the user's personal data, and show standards and solutions that pave the path towards an IoT and business models that d...
The interconnected nature of today's IoT systems can be challenging to follow even for experts. Complex and obscured data processing methods, combined with commercially sensitive black box hardware can make it problematic to determine where data originates from, how it is processed and who is accountable when things go wrong. FutureEverything advocates an artist led methodology to reveal, e...

Much of the potential of the IoT will be realised through value-added services, but this is being held back by fragmentation and limited interoperability. W3C is addressing this through developing web standards for things that decouple applications from the underlying IoT technologies. Applications will no longer need to be developed around the details of the myriad IoT technologies and standards. This means that developers can create applications more easily, ...
With urbanization and the effect of climate changes, we are moving towards a world where hydro-political issues may become a reality.
