This wetlab based course will feature hands-on training for participants reviewing the principles and techniques for ocular trauma repair. Participants will review principles for the repair of complex corneoscleral lacerations, while having hands on experience in practicing basic and advanced corneal suturing techniques, including suturing under tension. Basic principles will be discussed including suture selection, placement, width, depth, and techniques for placing sutures in cornea, sclera, conjunctiva and at the corneoscleral limbus. Participants will have the opportunity to practice adjuvant techniques such as application of cyanoacrylate corneal glue, a simple technique for isolating, removing and replacing extraocular muscles, as well as principles for the repair of a dehisced corneal graft.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the principles for the surgical repair of a complex traumatic corneoscleral laceration.
  • Apply a variety of suturing techniques which may be used for suturing conjunctiva, cornea and sclera, including under tension, to aid in the repair of ocular trauma.
